Be Prepared for (Another) Perfect storm

Ice StormBy
Doug Wilson
Assistant Manager

Last March, a storm cell traveled across the Eastern United States from Alabama through North Carolina with impeccable timing. Preceded by days of rain and followed by a freezing temperatures, the storm cell produced large accumulations of snow and ice.
Much of that snow and ice collected on wet trees like a magnet, causing them to bend, break and even uproot onto our power lines. After the storm passed, the Broad River system was left with 40 % of its membership without power. The first light of day revealed twenty downed poles and thousands of feet of wire on the ground across Cherokee, Spartanburg and Union Counties.
Broad River crews, with assistance from other state cooperatives and contract crews, worked throughout the night restoring power. An outage that could have lasted five days was completed in seventy-two hours because of the efforts and hard work of a dedicated work force that was prepared to leave their homes and family, which in some cases were without power, to restore a crippled system back to normality.
As we enter into the winter season, it is impossible to dismiss the potential of another storm like the one experienced last year, or even worse. Broad River will again be prepared to handle any such storms, but there are ways you can help as well. The information gathered during an outage is critical to our restoration efforts and can be easily analyzed to improve response times:

  • When reporting an outage, use our outage management system. The call is identified by your unique caller ID number and is matched to your location on our system.
  • To use our PORCHE system to report an outage at your home, call (864) 489-5738 in Cherokee County and (866) COOP OUT or (866) 266-7688 toll free in other counties.
  • It is important for you to keep a current phone number on file and this should be the number you will be calling from to report the outage.
  • If you are calling from another location you will be prompted to enter the number of the service you are reporting.
  • During the call you are given the opportunity to report the known cause of the outage if necessary.
  • Remember, during an outage cordless phones require power and will be useless in reporting the outage. Please keep an older analog type phone connected to your home or a cell phone with the number listed in our files for emergency.
  • If the outage you are reporting extends beyond two hours call hourly for the system to confirm that your outage is still valid.
  • Have laptops and cell phones fully charged before potential power outages, they may be your only lines of communication.
  • Make sure you’re connected! In addition to our outage system, members can relay outages, downed lines, or any other concerns through Broad River’s social networks facebook (facebook.com/BroadRiverCoop) and twitter (twitter.com/BroadRiverCoop). Broad River will also use these networks to communicate the status of outages.
